I find plein air painting a great challenge with a many great rewards. The challenge to find a subject, create a composition, and then getting this fleeting beautiful moment painted in a short amount of time amazes me every time. It is a constant joy and a great opportunity to just observe the beauty of nature.
This is very different than spending most of my past professional painting time in the studio doing watercolors with plenty of time to spend on each painting. I find my time outdoors stimulating. It is a continual learning experience and the more I paint, the more I find there is to learn.
Having a Masters in Fine Art from the University of Missouri was just the start of my art journey. Since then many excellent teachers, books, and hands on painting have contributed greatly to my growth.
I enjoy plein air paint outs and exhibiting my paintings at outdoor art festivals. It's fun discussing, describing and sharing information on where each painting was created, the weather conditions, and what drew me to that subject. I find many who are not familiar with plein air painting, and this gives me the opportunity to promote this form of painting.
